Prime TV Picks: Seven Must-Watch Films This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's unflinching commentary examines the oppressive nature of women's appearance and the feared consequences of advancing years. Demi Moore delivers an inspired portrayal as Elisabeth, an aging film star reduced to hosting a fitness program on television. Edged out by her slimy boss her manager Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and gruesome process titled "The Substance". This produces a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a steadily more toxic connection between the two. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit mystery stars the talented actress in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who opts for some time off from writing about world issues to board an opulent ship with a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her husband, and other affluent guests. Yet once an enigmatic female goes overboard overnight and everyone denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Streaming currently, Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills with this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly from the perspective of the spirit. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the lens – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage embraces his eccentric image via this self-referential adventure. He portrays an egotistical film star called Nicolas Cage who accepts a lucrative offer to attend a festive event in Mallorca for the rich superfan Javi. Contacted by the CIA to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. This Saturday, prime time, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has rendered the youth on edge. Once Finney is taken by the villain and held captive in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. However, the old telephone mounted nearby continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in this director's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple set about monetising the American public's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, however Chastain achieves to depict the character in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

This period's another release from Steven Soderbergh delivers a intelligence thriller as precise as the polo necks used by Michael Fassbender's British agent. Both actors excel of calm composure, leading to a delightful mind game of truth or lie develops. The supporting cast join in the smart espionage amusement.
