The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my companion was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable 10-storey building on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I shared that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an research lab at the university โ€“ close to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The man from Iraq approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview โ€“ but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit โ€“ a place where anything feels possible โ€“ she responded: โ€œWe can make that happen. When can you start?โ€ I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a masterโ€™s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and Iโ€™m always appreciative.
