In concert, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too." "The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to make music." "So all is invited to be the next part of the family." The trio's concert performances have seen them become staples of festival bills around Europe. Historic Recognition The band have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit. They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize. "I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?" The significance of the accolade resonates with the band. "We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that came before us." Personal Turmoil and Candor The album emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew. The themes detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be. "I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'." The group claimed victory in a major breakthrough list in 2013, and have subsequently scored several chart-topping albums. Development of Music That newfound toughness required a new sound – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before. For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums. "Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says. "'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound." I Quit evolves Haim's characteristic style, mixing acoustic rock with contemporary rhythms and catchy pop hooks. Stories and Shared Humor The trio's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures. A former partner left Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight. "When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible." The band concluded a lengthy tour, but mention they hope to perform live in the coming years. A Secure Future It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band.
